I'll be turning 18 in a month or so, and I want to get a credit card soon thereafter in order to start building credit. I couldn't get student loans this year because of my parent's poor credit and my lack of credit. However, I'm not sure what the best credit card would be for someone with absolutely no credit. Any suggestions?|||Due to laws that went into effect last year, if you are under 21 and a student, there are only two ways to get a credit card: (a) by getting a parent to co-sign with you, essentially promising to pay if you don't, or (b) proving that you are working pretty much full-time while going to school, and earning a regular salary.
The reason for the law was that too many college students were opening up credit cards, running them up to the max, and not paying them off. Since they were under 21, they was little that could be done to collect the debt.
As for student loans: have you looked into all of the options, including US government-backed grants and loans?|||Go through a local Credit Union. Set up a savings and checking account through them and then talk to a financial advisor about starting your credit. They will start you out small and give you very low interest.|||You can't. Federal Law is you cannot apply for a card without a parent till age 21
