How to close a college credit card account?

I had a college credit card for almost two years and I'm not a college student any more. So I'm considering to close my college credit card permanently.

Is it possible?

I heard it's not good for credit score, is it true?

Or can I transform college credit to a regular credit card at same bank?

Thanks much.|||Hi @Devenous! Your best bet is to give your credit card company a call and ask. They may be willing to switch your card to a traditional card with a better interest rate and perks in order to keep you as a customer.

Closing a credit card account can take a toll on your credit score. There are a couple of factors at work here. One is credit utilization, or how much credit you use compared to how much credit is available to you - the lower, the better. If you close a credit card, but maintain balances on other cards, it will appear that you are using a larger percentage of your overall credit, which can hurt your score. That doesn't sound like that's the case here, however.

Another way that closing a credit card account can hurt your credit score is the age of credit category. This accounts for a small percentage of your score and looks at the average age of your open credit accounts - the older, the better. While you'll maintain your credit history even if you close your card, you'll start from square one on age of credit if you don't have any other credit cards.

If the credit card company will transfer your card to a traditional one, that's the ideal scenario. If not, you may want to open a new credit card, while keeping your student card open. If you can, use the student card for small purchases and pay the bill in full every month. This way, you'll maintain the age of your credit - you may take a small hit from the new account - and you'll be demonstrating each month that you can manage credit responsibly, which will help you build your credit score. Good luck!|||Here some additional info. Make sure you have a least 1 credit card from major credit card issuers with a least a year of history before closing your college credit card account.
