What is the best credit card to use for earning frequent flyer miles?

I live in sunny southern California and will most likely be flying Southwest Airlines and the majority of my flights will be to Sacramento. I am looking for the best overall card. I would prefer a card which I can earn points on non travel related purchases. I also prefer a card with no annual fee. I'm not very educated in the earning of points and how those translate into flights. I'm really curious if the benefits outweigh the consequences of a credit card.
